Training Dummies V. 3.0 – Now Also for Lefties!

Category: Hobbies -> Exercise
Poly Count: Canvas Low poly (980); Armoured Medium poly (1210); Invisible Low poly (12); Swords Low poly ( < 500)
EPs Required: Nightlife or above

UPDATE, 1 NOV 2019: By request, I’ve added a “no sword” option to the “Select Sword” pie menu, that lets your Sims fence with – you guessed it – no sword (or rather, with a tiny, invisible one). This in case you instead of my TSM swords want to equip your Sims with a handheld accessory, be it a different sword or something else entirely (wands, lightsabers, cucumbers…).

I’ve also cleaned up the interactions a bit (you no longer get the “watch” option if you click on the dummy while the active Sim is fencing, for one thing) + have fixed some mega bork with the child sword selection. Also fixed the swords so they actually work with v. 2.5, for those of you who have both versions. (Yeah, I was seriously sleeping on the job when I tested these. ๐Ÿ˜ณ )

Please redownload if you want the updated versions!

I blame the fellow in the title pic for this. This wouldn’t have been necessary if it weren’t for him. He’s one of the main characters in my upcoming story – the first one you’ll meet, in fact (I know, I know, I’ve been talking about that danged story forever, but it’s getting close now!) – and he is, amongst other things, a pretty good swordsman. He’s also left-handed. Granted, he can use the sword just as well with his right hand, but when he can choose, he prefers his left. Which causes a bit of a problem when the sword-fighting happens on camera, since even though I can use my training dummies to stage it, all Sims fight right-handed with those.

Now, I’d never force a fellow lefty, pixellated or not, to use the right (or rather wrong ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) hand if he didn’t want to, so of course I had to update my training dummies for him. (Polished the swords some while I was at it, too.) So now your Sims can choose not just which sword to fight with, but which hand as well. Left-handed high-five!

BTW, all this has put me in a sword-fighting mood, so you know that sword mod I’ve been talking about? That’s what I’ll be doing… not next, I’ve got a request I need to see to first (that’s well under way, even though it’s kind of… I was going to say “snowballed”, but “avalanched” is probably a better description), but after that, there will be swords, yes, there will. ๐Ÿ˜€ (Just as a heads-up, I’ll probably need testers for it, but we’ll burn that bridge when we get to it.)

Please note that these dummies won’t overwrite the old 2.5 ones, so you’ll have to delete those manually if you don’t want them any more. The new dummies have shiny, new GUIDs, though, so you can have both these and the old ones in game at the same time without conflicts. The old swords, however, you’ll have to delete, they won’t work with the new dummies – but we’ll get to that a little later.

Anyway. Handedness menu looks like so:

Teens and older can set the handedness for both adults and children, but children can only set it for children. But no matter who sets it, handedness is independent for adults and children, so a right-handed daughter can use her left-handed father’s dummy without being sent to her room without dinner for messing things up for him. Also, the setting will stick when you leave the lot, so a left-handed dummy will stay left-handed until you change it manually.

Otherwise, v. 3.0 has the same features as v. 2.5, but in case you’re a new (or a forgetful old ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) downloader, here’s a run-down on them.

There are three training dummies for you and your Sims: an invisible dummy for $27, a canvas one for $292, and an armoured one for $355. (The canvas and armoured dummies have been extracted from TSM.)

The canvas dummy has four recols for the foot in Shasta’s pirate woods and three recols for the canvas, but the armoured dummy only has foot recols (even though the armour can be recoloured). They are not repositoried; I remember the old dummies didn’t want to play nice at all when I tried to repository them, so this time, I just let it be. Less chance of my suffering an aneurysm that way. ๐Ÿ˜›

As seen above, the invisible dummy comes with a placeholder crate recol (which is also the one in the catalogue) so you can see it when you place it, but the invisible recol is really, truly invisible: It doesn’t have any shadows, not even a sun shadow, so you’ll have to remember for yourself where you put it.

“Of course there’s a dummy there. Whatever ye say, m’lady. I believe ye. It’s right there. Uh-huh.”

The canvas and armoured dummies can’t intersect other objects, but the invisible one can (so you can e.g. put it inside another object without using cheats). It can also intersect Sims. Not sure why you’d do that, but you can if you want to.

“Oh, for the love of… I said I believe ye!”

The dummies can be used by Sims aged child to elder, who’ll gain Body skill and Sports enthusiasm (the latter only if you have FT, of course). Only one Sim can train with them at a time, but other Sims can look on and cheer when someone is training; the cheering Sim wonโ€™t gain skill or enthusiasm, of course, they aren’t cheering that hard, but theyโ€™ll have fun and be social.

When training, both children and adults have eight different TSM swords to choose from. There’s also an invisible “sword”, added by request, in case you’d rather equip your fencing Sims with a handheld accessory of some kind. Children can only choose between no sword and the wooden one for themselves, though, it didn’t seem safe to me to let them run around unsupervisedwith sharp swords, so if your Simlets really, really want to use a real sword, an adult Sim has to make the selection for them. Just as with the handedness, the sword selection is independent, so adults and children can have different swords set for the same dummy. This selection, too, will stick, so if your Sim has a favourite sword, you won’t have to re-select it for them the next time you enter the lot.

Both when you select a sword and set handedness, a friendly little confirmation dialogue will pop up, so you’ll know the selection went through. You can also check both settings, just in case you’re absent-minded like me and forget what you’ve selected.

Now. The swords. They’ve been updated, too – not just the BHAVs, mind, but the meshes as well, to make them one-handed rather than three-handed. ๐Ÿ˜› They look much more sensible together with the animations now IMHO. (Reminds me that I should probably give my accessory swords an overhaul, too, but that will have to be a later project.)

I have renamed the sword packages but I have NOT recloned them, they still have the same GUIDs as the 2.0/2.5 swords, so if you have the swords from either v. 2.0 or v. 2.5, delete those swords and install these instead. They’ll work for the older dummies as well (but the old swords won’t work for v. 3.0).

In case you’re like me and never, ever keep your CC in the folders the creator set up, the files you’ll want to hunt down all have names that start with

accobj_NixNivis_TSMArmouredDummyV2 for the adult swords and

accobj_NixNivis_TSMArmouredDummyV25 for the child swords.

And the swords are:

You don’t get a picture of the invisible sword, because it’s… well, invisible. ๐Ÿ˜›

Children get the same types of swords as adults. The default wooden sword is child-sized, but the others are almost, but not quite full-sized (that looked a little too weird). This is by design; in my mind, if a parent or guardian is hardcore enough to let their little Simlet train with real swords, they wouldn’t give them some silly little baby sword, either. If the kid can’t lift it, well, then they’ll just have to train some more. (No mollycoddling your kids in medieval times.) So the child swords look like so:

Please note that the swords won’t appear in the catalogue. You’ll still need to keep them in your Downloads folder, though, or your Sims will fence empty-handed no matter which hand they use.

Just as my other training dummies, these have been cloned from Rebecahโ€™s duel dummy (or rather, I cloned them from my v. 2.5 dummies, which in turn were cloned from Rebecah’s). So if you clone these to make your own objects (and by all means do!), then please give credit to me and Rebecah both. None of these objects would exist if it werenโ€™t for her simming genius and generous policy. Thank you, Rebecah! โค

  1. I’m left handed myself and I never thought about it before, just presumed all my sims were right handed. How silly of me; time to get some southpaws out there! Thanks! Does this overwrite the previous version or you need to delete it separately?

I think you already know that I’d test the sword fighting mod for you, but I’ll mention it anyway. XD Are you still going to try doing a sci fi one as well?

    • Another lefty, yay! ๐Ÿ˜€ To tell you the truth, I hadn’t really thought about it before, either, not until this story character came along (and I’m glad he did). And you’ll need to delete the old dummies manually, the new ones won’t overwrite them; should have mentioned that in the post, sorry! (Has fixed it now.) You don’t have to delete them unless you want to, though, the new ones have new GUIDs, so they won’t conflict. It’s just the old swords you have to get rid of, since they won’t work with the new dummies (no left-handed anims).

And yes, I had a feeling you’d be first in line to volunteer for testing, but it’s good to get it confirmed, thanks! Since it’ll be a fairly complex mod, I think it’ll be best to have others try it out as well. I know from experience that when you’ve worked on something big and for some time, it’s easy to get tunnel vision and just test for expected scenarios – but it’s the unexpected ones that’s bound to cause trouble. ๐Ÿ˜‰ So yeah, other sets of eyes will definitely be needed. It’ll be some time yet before it’s ready for testing, though.

  2. This is awesome Nix! Thank you for sharing this! *plops it down in her medieval content hood*, Will have to search for those swords though! *eyes the amount of content dumped into a folder* and apparently reorganize everything in said folder, but! I love this download. Again, thanks for sharing!

    • Thank you! Glad you like it! ๐Ÿ˜€

And yeah, sorry about that; lazy Nix was too lazy to reclone the swords. ๐Ÿ˜ณ If it helps, the file names you’re looking for start with accobj_NixNivis_TSMArmouredDummyV2 for the adult swords and accobj_NixNivis_TSMArmouredDummyV25 for the child ones (I’ve added that info to the post as well). Unless you’ve renamed them, of course (I do that all the time myself); then you’ll know better than me what they might be called. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Thanks! Glad you like it. ๐Ÿ˜€

On a scale from 1 to 10, how badly will you hate me if I do my accessory swords over and make them smaller as well? If I do, they won’t match your awesome Armoury add-ons. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

      • Like 8.5. When I was doing my (as-yet-incomplete) fantasy story, the accessory swords seemed the perfect size.

I’m cool with the accessories being updated, and would even be happy to refoobulate the scabbards for the smaller accessories, but would it be possible to do the new swords as a new set instead of a replacer? That way, the downloader would be able to make the choice as to which size of sword to download.

        • Very sorry for the late reply!

Well, at least 8.5 is better than the full 10. ๐Ÿ˜› Simply editing the meshes would be a lot easier, you know I’d be lying if I said it wouldn’t be – but I’m all for giving people options to choose from, and making a new set of swords instead of a replacer one isn’t a bad idea at all. So yeah, I’ll make the resized swords as a new set. (Probably won’t happen anytime soon, though. Or it might, depending on how my creative juices flow – you know how that goes.) And I’d be thrilled if you’d want to make a new set of scabbards to match once we get there – but that’s of course completely up to you. I know you’ve go other things on your plate.

  3. Cool upload; thank you! I do have one question, though. Are all those nicks in the meshes, or can I get rid of them by recolouring? I must admit, that aspect of “medieval” content makes me crazy. Metalwork and furniture did not come “pre-worn”. If you’d care to see a sword made by traditional methods, here’s a video I found very informative (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwmQU_FKLCY). Just look at the shine on that blade!

    • Sorry for the late reply. The nicks are in the meshes and textures both. As I say in the post, they’ve been extracted from TSM (so your ire would really be better directed at EA than at me). Other than resizing them, I haven’t touched them.

But what’s to say these swords are hot off the forge, so to speak? Maybe their being nicked is why they’re being used for training? I mean, Lord Highnmighty certainly couldn’t take a nicked sword into battle; why, both his friends and his enemies (who may or may not be one and the same, depending on the day of the week) would think him some pauper who can’t afford to keep his own weaponsmith, but has to buy his weapons second hand from some backalley arms peddler. The shame! No, the nicked and worn swords are better left for his squires and household knights to train with. Preferably somewhere out of sight. ๐Ÿ˜›

But to each their own. You are of course under no obligation to download anything of mine, so if you don’t like it, by all means feel free to give this one a pass. I mean, it’s not as if I won’t allow you to leave if you don’t download or anything. ๐Ÿ˜‰ (What? That forbidding door at the end of the hallway? Oh, there’s nothing special about that door, nothing at all. Now that you mention it, maybe it does look a little bit like the door to a dungeon, just a little, but I assure you that’s pure coincidence. Why it has all those locks and bolts? Those are just so… so it won’t be blown open. Whines and moans? I have no idea what you’re talking about, I don’t hear any whines and moans. It must be the wind…)

  4. What? Are you telling me the great Lord Highnmighty can not keep his sword polished, ever-ready to leap eagerly from its scabbard? Have they no whetstones in his realm? Have they no files? Has he no one who can keep his squires and pages to their work? Oh, the shame!!!
More seriously, ire? At you? Perish the thought! I will admit to being exasperated at the universe (or simiverse, anyway, especially EA) when I commented, but I recognised those swords from TSM. I knew those weren’t your nicks, I was just hoping there was a way to fix them.

    • Nope, not a single file or whetstone in the entire realm; against the counsel of his lords, the King sold them all in order to pay for his never-ending wars (since he’d never had to polish as much as a single little kitchen knife himself, he assumed nobody else did, either). Unfortunately, the person he sold them to then turned right around and sold them all to his enemies at half price, which meant they had very sharp swords at the next battle. You can probably guess how well that one went for the King. ๐Ÿ˜› Of course, the King by the grace of God doesn’t make mistakes, so he blamed the whole debacle on Highnmighty, claiming he’d set a bad precedent for the troops by not keeping his sword sharp. Poor man had to run for his life.

And phew; I was worried you didn’t like me any more. โค And there is a way to fix the nicks – and that's if I clean up the meshes and textures. (Which wouldn't be all that hard, really, the meshes are pretty straightforward, it would just be a bit tedious.) If you want to, I can absolutely do that, but it won't happen soon; I've got some other things I need to get off my plate first – like those counter sides someone requested before. ๐Ÿ˜‰ (That's the request I mentioned at the beginning at the post, BTW, the one that's sort of avalanched. Let me put it this way, it won't just be sides.)

  5. Oh, goodness! Where to begin?

Well, first, I am so excited! I can’t wait to see what you’ve come up with for even completer Counter Completers! That is going to be awesome!

Second, I’m pretty sure it’s in Teh Roolz that a creator should (1) enjoy creating, and (2) make things that s/he would like to have for his/her own game. If those nicks don’t bother you, then you absolutely shouldn’t worry about fixing them (EA sure didn’t!). The last thing I want to do is add another tedious thing to your to-do list that is already so long I think it may be visible from orbit! You have so many brilliant ideas it boggles me.

Third, looking closely at the Crude sword makes me wonder if I could get away with just a texture change; it doesn’t seem to be as structurally damaged as the other blades. When I have some time to work on it, I will give it a try anyway.

Fourth, I know of a US politician like that King…but since I am not wholly lacking in discretion, I think I will shut up now! ^_^

    • All right, so this has to be the mother (or maybe the grandmother) of all late replies. Very, very sorry! ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Hee, I come to serve, as they say. Don’t know if you’ve seen Day After Tomorrow, but the completer avalanche has now reached similar proportions. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I know some simmers who would argue that Teh Roolz are that a creator is obliged only to create things that fit everybody’s personal preferences at all times. ๐Ÿ˜› Glad you’re not one of them (not that I even for a fraction of a second believed you were). โค I've got a pretty high stupidity pain threshold when it comes to EA things; had those nicks been on a user-made mesh, I probably would have sighed deeply about people not doing their homework, but since it's EA and that's about what you'd expect, I can shrug it off. So the nicks don't really bug me – but! The thing is, it’s never just the one downloader who’s bothered by something. For everyone who actually comments about it, there are at least ten others who are grumbling in silence, and another five hitting the Back button in disgust. So I’ll bet you anything it’s not just you who don’t like those nicks. So, I’m going to do something about it – but later, because you’re quite right about the length of my to-do list. It’s… long. (I’m told some of the astronauts on the ISS recently mistook it for the Chinese Wall.)

But you’re absolutely right about the Crude sword – the mesh is un-nicked. (Which amuses me greatly; the one sword that you’d expect to be nicked and jagged (I think it’s a cousin of the one used to murder William de la Pole)… that’s the only one that isn’t nicked. But that’s EA for ya. ๐Ÿ™„ ) So you could absolutely get away with a texture change on that one, especially if you turn up the shiny in the TXMT. All the other swords except for the wooden ones are set to be quite shiny, so you can copy the specCoef and envcube values from one of those if you’d like (and please let me know if you think I’m speaking mumbo jumbo here; not sure how well you get along with the TXMT).

And now that you mention it, I think I might have heard of a politician like that…

  6. Oh, Nix, you have no idea how much I appreciate your post. ♡ September was an awful month. I lost two friends who were very, very dear to me; for one I was also her trustee and had power-of-attorney, so it fell to me to make all the final arrangements. When I did have time to sit down at my computer, it was to check the news; as a “flaming liberal” in the US (or, you know, if I were European, a degree or two left of centre…) that merely added anger to depression. Reading your post was the first time since August that I’ve grinned and said, “Oh, that’s going to be awesome, and so much fun! I can’t wait until it’s finished!!” THANK YOU!!!

    • Croi, I’m so glad to see you! โค But I'm so very sorry for your losses. This is the blessing and the curse of the Internet: You get to meet all these great people from all over the world, whom you'd never have known even existed otherwise… but then one of them is going through a rough time and you really want to be there for them, even if it's just to give them a hug or bring over a bowl of soup or something, only you can't because you're in Sweden and they're in the US, or Australia, or Japan (or the Netherlands or the UK or some place else that's close in comparison, but still too far away), so all you can do is offer them hugs through the computer and think about them really, really hard, and hope they can feel it somehow. But I'm glad if I could make you smile a little, just for a moment.

US politics make me just a little sick to the stomach (pretty sure yours is the only western country where the head of state thinks being accused of sexual assault adds to your qualifications), and I'm an ocean away, so I can only imagine what it must be like when you're in the middle of it. Your politicians make ours look sane and reasonable – and that's coming from someone in a country that currently doesn't have a real government. ๐Ÿ˜› (Well, we do have a government, but it's a caretaker government; we had a general election in early September, and before, we've always, always had a government in place when the Riksdag – our parliament – started its autumn session two weeks later. Except now, like so many other European countries, we've come down with a bad case of racist Nazis (who are trying very hard to pretend they aren’t Nazis/alt-right any more and will get all huffy if you call them that) and the other parties are still trying to figure out what they’re supposed to do about it. So, no real government yet – and we’re really, really not used to that. That’s the kind of thing that happens in other countries, not in neat, orderly Sweden where everything always is neat and orderly.)

And yeah, to me as a European, it’s quite amusing that in the US, liberal = leftist. Tell a European liberal that, and they won’t like you very much. (Here in Sweden, we even have a party that’s called the Liberals, and they’re a centre party – and in parliament, they belong to the right-centre bloc.) Me, I’m a left-wing Social Democrat over here, so in the US, I’d be a communist. In some states, they’d probably tar and feather me and chase me out with pitchforks. ๐Ÿ˜›

Anyway. As I said – glad I could make you smile in the midst of everything. And it shouldn’t be too long before the counter avalanche, at least, is ready for public consumption, so stay tuned!

  7. Virtual hugs are pretty awesome too; the caring, compassion, and friendship that prompt them are just the same, undiminished by distance. Thank you very, very much! โค๏ธ

And re: US politics, I feel like I need to offer a cringing, shamed apology to the whole world. I’d like to hide behind a self-exculpatory hashtag #NotAllYanks, but that’s every bit as pathetic as #NotAllMen. No, it’s not all Yanks, but where was I, why wasn’t I fighting when the Fairness Doctrine was overturned, allowing the development of the right-wing propaganda machine and Faux News? Where was my voice when Reagan critically undermined unions and demonised the poor? Where was I at so many critical junctures along the road that brought us to this state? Actions have consequences. So does inaction.

I can offer reasons, but they are not excuses. There’s a joke in the US, a reply used when asked a general “Hey, how’re you doing?” question. “Aw, man, I’m so broke I can’t even pay attention!” I’ve used it myself; at the time it seemed better than whining, but it’s not very funny anymore. Paying attention is not, can not be, a luxury, and like white privilege, the US has treated it like one. We put a man on the moon, and then, just to prove it wasn’t a lucky fluke, we did it again. How have we, in a mere fifty years, become a nation of science deniers? We are a nation of immigrants. Who decided to slam the door (repeatedly) on subsequent generations of refugees no more desperate than our forebearers were when they first arrived? I don’t know; I wasn’t paying attention. I was too busy trying to keep food on the table and a roof over our heads and always, interminably, trying to get healthcare (one of my daughters was born with spina bifida; in the US a pre-exisiting condition means denial of medical coverage, bankruptcy, or both). I wasn’t paying attention until one day I looked around and realised that greed had turned a once-proud country into a midden of broken toys, broken promises, and broken dreams. All I can do now is try to clean up the mess I let happen on my watch, and swear that I’m paying attention now.

  8. I wanted an invisible training sword, so I could use lowered swords that stand in the mirror.

    • Sorry, but I don’t really feel like adding another sword, at least not right now; it takes quite a bit of time and tinkering, and I have way too much on my plate modding-wise already as it is. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

What I can do, though, is to make one (or more) of the existing swords invisible for you; that’s just a matter of changing the texture, so it isn’t anywhere near as time-consuming as adding a completely new sword. Just let me know if this would work for you, and in that case, which of the swords you’d like me to make invisible.

      • That could be a cheaty way to do the Sim Wardrobe duelling swords. Just make the swords invisible and use whatever accessory swords you have.

        • You know, that’s a very good idea. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m still working on my sword mod (that’ll be a bit different from the Sim Wardrobe one – it’ll have more functions and it’ll also be a social, not an object), but this is definitely something that could be useful for current uses of the duelling swords, who are fed up with their non-pirate Sims fighting with cutlasses. Come to think of it, I might throw something like that together; making an invisible replacement for the SW duelling sword wouldn’t be any more difficult than making one for my own swords.

          • I just want an invisible sword to use the lowered swords I have in the game mirror. like i would use a wand (because my game is all about harry potter) i would use a wand that i have in the mirror and stand over the sword that in the end could simulate a duel of wizards!

                • Great! Hopefully, you’ll be even happier now, because I’ve updated the dummies. ๐Ÿ˜€

I know I said before I wouldn’t add another sword, but I changed my mind. You now have “No Sword (Empty)” as the bottom-left option on the “Select Sword” menu, that spawns an invisible “sword” so it looks like Sims are fencing empty-handed. So now your can equip your wizard Sims with wands or whatever else strikes their (and your) fancy. ๐Ÿ™‚

In case you only want the updated dummies + the invisible sword, you can download them here. If you want the full download, with the recolours of the dummies and also with all the other swords, you’ll need to use the Download button above.

                  Hope you like it!

                    • Glad you like it. ๐Ÿ™‚ In retrospect, this is one of those things I really should have thought of myself, but of course I didn’t. Good thing I got a request for it!

                  • I searched so hard for a mode so you fell from heaven!
thanks it was perfect, I just need to download some wands to match the invisible model.
sorry my english, i’m brazilian ” brazil ” and i am using google translator> <

                    • Yay! So glad you like it! ๐Ÿ˜€ Hope you have fun – and thanks for the request, it was a good one!

And don’t worry about your English, I have no problems understanding you. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m Swedish myself, so English isn’t my first language, either. I know how hard it can be.

  9. Thank you. For the first time ever, like 11 years, I’m doing something with swords and have realized I will need some. This is so great!
