Training Dummies v. 2.0 (and 2.5) – Now with Sword Options!

Training Dummies with Sword Options

Category: Hobbies -> Exercise
Poly Count: Canvas Low poly (980); Armoured Medium poly (1210); Invisible Low poly (12); Swords Low poly ( < 500)
EPs Required: Nightlife or above

This download post was actually inspired by you, my downloaders – or at least by some of your screenshots. πŸ˜‰

Back story: a while back, I made a couple of training dummies (cloned from the brilliant Rebecah’s duel dummy), one armoured and one invisible. One change I made from Rebecah’s duel dummy was to make Sims use swords instead of the original cutlass; the armoured dummy had one kind of sword, and the invisible one another.

Now, in the screenshots I’ve seen with my dummies, people almost always seem to prefer the armoured dummy over the invisible one – obvious to me from the sword – even when it means moveobjects’ing it out of the way (which they wouldn’t have had to do with the invisible dummy). Maybe I’m over-analysing things, but to me this seems to indicate that people aren’t too keen on the sword for invisible dummy, and/or preferred the armoured sword even if meant more work when they set up the shot.

And this got me thinking. Wouldn’t it be great if people could choose which sword they wanted their Sims to use, instead of being stuck with whatever sword I’d picked for that particular dummy (which they might not like)? And not just choose between these two swords, either, but from several different ones? I had a fairly good idea how to go about setting this up… so I did.

So, my offering today is three training dummies, that each have no less than eight different swords for your Sims to choose from. En garde! πŸ˜€

Update, 19 October 2015: At the request of Charity322, there is now a v. 2.5 of the training dummies available, where adults can choose different swords for their children as well. Scroll down to the menu screenshots for more info.

Except for the swords, which we’ll get to shortly, the features for all three training dummies are the same as for my old ones: they can be used by Sims from child to elder, who’ll gain Body skill and Sports enthusiasm – the latter only if you have FT, of course. They can only be used by one Sim at a time, though (in the title pic, Kara the maid is actually using the invisible dummy), but other Sims can look on and cheer when someone else is fencing. The cheering Sim won’t gain any skill or enthusiasm, but they’ll have fun and be social:

Cheering
“Go get ‘im, sis!”

And the training dummies are:

A canvas training dummy for $290, extracted from TSM…

Canvas Size Comparison

…an armoured training dummy for $351, also extracted from TSM…

Armoured Size Comparison

…and an invisible training dummy for $25, not extracted from TSM. πŸ˜› And when I say “invisible,” I do mean invisible: It has no shadows, not even a sun shadow. (Just to be on the safe side, though, it does have a tan placeholder recol, so you can see where it is when placing it.)

Invisible Size Comparison
“Umm… yeah. Sure. If you say it’s there…”

The canvas and armoured dummies can’t intersect other objects (why would they?), but the invisible one can. Good if you want to make it look like your Sim is ruining his sword against a tree because he thinks his little brothers have been killed, or if you have this deco object you think would make for a great fencing target: just plop an invisible dummy inside the other object, and you’re good to go.

The canvas dummy has three recols for the canvas and ten recols for the foot (the latter as usual in Pooklet’s naturals), whilst the armoured one only has recols for the foot. The feet are not repositoried; I wanted to, I really did, but they simply refused to play nice. 😦 I don’t know if it’s a problem with the original object or with my cloning or whatever, but no matter what I did, the slave object ended up being “not designable” and I could. not. fix it. (And before you ask “did you check [this]?” – yes, I did. Trust me, I did, at least five times.) So, no repository – but if you want to try to make them repository yourself, then please go right ahead. Maybe you’ll have better luck than I did. :/

Anyway. The recols look as follows:

Recols 01
Recols 02
Recols 03

Now. The swords. Yes, I’ve intentionally put this off to keep you on tenterhooks. πŸ˜‰ For all of the training dummies, when you click on a dummy that isn’t in use, Sims aged teen or older will get three menu options: Fence, Select Sword and Check Sword. (Children can only “Fence” or “Check Sword”.) The “Select Sword” option differs a little between the original version (v. 2.0) and v. 2.5, though.

With v. 2.0, you can only select swords for teens and up; children will always use the wooden sword. The menu looks like so:

Select sword menu

With V. 2.5, though, children still only get the “Fence” and “Check Swords” options, whilst teens and up will also be able to “Select Sword” – but now the menu will look like this:

Select sword menu, v. 2.5

Adults and children both will then have the same eight swords to choose from as with v. 2.0 above. You do NOT have to choose the same kind of sword for them, though (unless you want to, of course) – adults can use one kind of sword and children another. πŸ˜€

Once you’ve selected your sword, with both variations a friendly little dialogue will pop up confirming it. (For v. 2.5 it will also specify whether the sword is for adults or for children, just in case you’re absent-minded like me and forgot what you just clicked.) And the training dummy will remember which sword you’ve selected, too, so in case you always want the same sword for the same dummy, you won’t have to reselect it every time your Sims use the dummy. Nifty, eh?

You don’t have to select a sword in order for your Sims to use the dummy, though. If you don’t select one, with both variations, your adult Sims will use the standard sword. With v. 2.5, children will use the wooden sword if you don’t select one for them.

And just in case you forget if you’d chosen a sword and/or which one it was, you can check which kind of sword(s) is selected. This can be done when the dummy is in use, and also by children.

Check sword menu

Aaaand finally… for all three training dummies of both variations, the swords your Sims can choose between are:

In case you think these swords look a lot like the swords from TSM, then you… are absolutely correct. πŸ˜› They are indeed the same swords, they use the same meshes and textures, even (waste not, want not, as they say). These are objects, though, not Bodyshop accessories – but they will not appear in the catalogue. Even so, you still need to keep them in your Downloads folder lest your Sims will fence empty-handed. Which would be why the folder with the swords is labelled “DoNotDelete.” πŸ˜‰

As usual, since these were cloned from Rebecah’s duel dummy, her terms of use apply. So if you want to clone these dummies to make your own, knock yourselves out. πŸ˜€ Credit is always appreciated, but if you do give credit (and you will, right?), then please either give it to me and Rebecah both, or to Rebecah only. None of these objects would exist if it weren’t for her simming genius and generous policy. ❀

  1. Oooohhh, I love this! Thank you so much!
Just a quick question: It says “Requires Nightlife or above”, so if I don’t have Nightlife, but OFB and Seasons, it should work, right?

    • And thank you for commenting! I’m glad you like it! πŸ˜€

And yep, that’s absolutely right about the EPs. So you’re good to go. πŸ™‚

      • Hi NIxNivis
My name is Kay and i hope you get this message. I absolutely love your work and have been using them for years .
I did my homework and read your FAQ about request . i am aware there is a 80-95% chance you may say no however you noted it wont hurt to ask. If you can please contact me via Email and i will give more details ,Im really hoping i catch your interest and you have some spare time. I would love to with you. my request is only for sims 2 i would not go against any of your rules and request.
Other thank that I will absolutely be using this in my films and thank you so much sharing this.

        [e-mail redacted]

  2. What magic is this!? Nix this is such a great idea πŸ˜€ I’m impressed with everything of course but the super secret no shadow in daylight HOW DID YOU MANAGE THAT *-*
    Thank you!

    • Hee! Glad you like it! And I could tell you how I did the no-sun-shadow thing, but then I’d have to kill you and I’d rather not do that. πŸ˜‰ But it entails arcane rituals and sacrificing a goat at midnight… and now I’ve probably said too much already. *looks around nervously*

(Actually, it only entails the arcane ritual of changing a value in the geometric node from 0 to 1. πŸ˜‰ It has to be done at mesh level, though, you can’t do it with recolours – which is why I made the invisible dummy a separate object, instead of just slapping an invisible recol on one of the others. To me, an invisible recol with a big, honking sun shadow is about as invisible as you are when you’re hiding behind a curtain… when the curtain is sheer and you have the sun at your back. πŸ˜› )

  3. I love this, especially the sword choice. Thanks heaps. Do you plan to add any differently shaped swords, like a katana or a rapier, or is that not possible?

Is it possible for an adult to choose a non wooden sword for children? I have a few hardass sims who wouldn’t let them train with a wussy sword. XD

I have to ask and yeah I know I’m always … ooh can you do this too, but you always do such cool things that it gives me ideas. XD Would you be able to change the dueling swords at Sim Wardrobe http://www.simwardrobe.com/ Sims 2 – Objects – Other Objects – Dueling Swords, so that you get a choice of swords to duel with instead of just the cutlasses (you can’t fence with cutlasses lol)?

    Thanks again!

    • Thank you! As always, very glad you like it! πŸ˜€

About adding more swords, no and yes; I can’t add any more sword to these particular dummies, I’ve hit the limit for how much stuff I can add to them – but I could make a new dummy with different swords. Since I have these dummies to work from, it wouldn’t be too much of a hassle. So, a katana and a rapier… any more swords you’d like to see added? Eight is the limit, though, and I think I’d like to keep three slots open for now – but there’s room for up to three more. πŸ™‚ Can’t be anything too wild, though; I need to be able either to find or to make a mesh for it (and I’m not great with too complicated meshes).

The Sim Wardrobe sword – sorry, but that won’t be happening. 😦 I haven’t been able to find Paladin’s policy on cloning and/or making changes to his objects anywhere (and nobody on the ‘Net seems to know what it might be, either). The closest I’ve got is his redistribution policy – which threatens with prosecution under the DMCA if you share his files. :/ And for all I know, he might consider cloning to be a form of redistribution… so I don’t dare touch them. Sorry.

And finally, about letting an adult choose a sword for children. There, at least, I have good news! I’ll freely admit I hadn’t thought about it before, but I think it’s a very good idea – I mean, if the parent/guardian is cool with the kids using real swords, then why shouldn’t they? So I’m already on it. πŸ™‚ I’ll have to make a new set of swords for the Simlets, though (I need to change the meshes a bit for them to work for kids, the adult swords clip badly), so they won’t be finished right away – but it shouldn’t be too long before v. 2.5 is up. Thanks for the idea!

And please, keep on asking things! I love getting input, I think it’s great when people take an active part and it can (obviously) give me new ideas that I hadn’t thought of before. So you keep on doing what you’re doing, and don’t ever worry about asking for too many things or being too demanding or anything like that – you’re not. ❀

      • Ah, yeah. Unfortunately, as far as I know Paladin doesn’t allow alteration of his stuff, which I really should have remembered as I altered his Vocational Training Controller to teach all the skills and I wanted to share it, but couldn’t find any way to contact him to ask.

I’m not sure of the policy (there’s an email address there to ask for permission, but don’t know if you’d get a response seeing as the site is dead), but Rose Sims has a lot of sword meshes. The wayback machine can usually access the site http://web.archive.org/web/20110314151740/http://www.rosesims2.net/. Under Magic there is just about any weapon you could want. I saw katanas and a rapier, something that looked like a falchion, sai, staffs, even a scythe. Also lightsabres in red and blue, as someone else asked for. Mercury Sims has some nice katana meshes, but they do say no redistribution http://mercury1999.blog37.fc2.com/blog-entry-157.html (there is a place where you could email them and ask though).

        • I’ve already found some nice meshes on Turbosquid (a few katanas, a rapier and a couple of lightsabres), but I’m definitely going to have a look at Rose Sims and Mercury Sims, for inspiration if nothing else. Thanks for the tip! πŸ˜€

        • Aaaaand v. 2.5, where adults can select swords for children, is up! πŸ˜€ Sorry it took so long, but Real Life interfered.

Still working on the version with swords other than longswords, and also on that Paladin edit. (I haven’t been able to make it so you can select swords for that one, unfortunately, but I’m working on a way to allow the player to use different swords anyway.) Watch this space, as they say. πŸ˜‰

    • Thank you! πŸ˜€ I’m so glad you like it! Beck’s dummy is awesome, I have it in my contemporary ‘hood. πŸ™‚ This community is very lucky to have her!

  4. That is brilliant.Absolutely brilliant.I download this, even if I am completely in scifiworlds for the moment, lol.
    Thank you for this.
    carolus

p.s.I join the wish of Charity 322 about the dueling swords.Perhaps although lightsabers?

    • Thank you so much! I’m very glad you like it, and that you want to download it even if it’s for an era far, far away. πŸ˜€

But like I told Charity above, I won’t be doing anything with Sim Wardrobe’s duelling swords, I’m sorry. I haven’t been able to find his policy on cloning/editing his objects anywhere; all I’ve found is his redistribution policy, which threatens with prosecution under the DMCA if you share his files. :/ And for all I know, he’d consider cloning to be a form of redistribution… so I don’t dare touch those swords. Sorry.

But! It looks like I’ll be making another training dummy, with different swords (I can’t add any more to these dummies, eight is the limit, but I can make a new dummy with new swords). I’d be happy to add a lightsabre or two to that one if you’d like. Then at least your Sith and Jedis could fence, even if they wouldn’t be able to duel to the death. πŸ˜‰

  5. You have ‘got it goin’ on!’ Another winner (and the crowd goes wild – again).

I’m late because the computer ate my comment. :o(

    • Bad computer! No cookie! 😦

I’m very glad you like it – but once again, it’s not that I’m tall, I’m standing on the shoulders on a giant. πŸ™‚ If I hadn’t had Rebecah’s dummy to work from, I’d be at a complete loss here.

  6. This is a amazing idea, and a brilliant improvement on an already superb project. I’ve always enjoyed the training dummies, and being able to pick your sword is just icing on the cake. If I ever have the energy, I’ll pick about in the guts of the object and see how the swords are spawned. My Klingons need bat’leth training.

    • Thank you very much! I’m so glad you like it! πŸ˜€

And by all means, pick away – and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. πŸ™‚ In the meantime, though… it looks like I’ll be making another dummy, with different swords (I’ve reached the limit for how many swords I can add to these dummies, or rather for how many attributes I can add, so I can’t add any more to them), and if you want I could add a bat’leth for you. Given that I can find a mesh, that is; it’s a little too complex for me to be able to make myself, but I might know someone who has a mesh I can use…

      • Hi! I’m someone. (Sorry if the name threw you off; I don’t have a WordPress account and I usually use my FB account to post quick comments here, but recently changed my profile information as part of a lame joke and am now stuck with the name of a popular children’s song where my regular name should be) πŸ™‚

To be honest, I wasn’t really impressed with the first set of Klingon blades I freehanded. Okay, so the D’K’tahg was okay, but everything else just seemed too rounded, and the wrappings on the bat’leth were way too big. I found a few models on 3D Warehouse and made a half-assed attempt at converting them into accessories, but eventually shelved the project because I had higher priorities. But with these new possibilities for the training dummy, I may just blow the dust off the Blender files and finish the project I started. I had a cursory look at the BHAVs and they don’t seem like too much for my fuzzy brain to handle.

        • ROFL! Oce, it’s you! πŸ˜€ You’re right, the name threw me completely; usually when it’s a name I don’t recognise, I check the e-mail address, but for some reason I didn’t think to do it this time. *facepalm*

Anyway. Yep, you were the someone I was thinking of. I’m just going to stand over here and watch, then. πŸ˜‰ And you’re right, if you know a little bit about BHAVs, it really isn’t all that complicated, it just looks fancy in-game (but don’t tell anybody I said so, or I’ll lose all my wizard cred πŸ˜› ). Honestly, to me the most difficult part was positioning the sword meshes right – it’s pretty much the same pain in the rear it is with poseboxes. (Of course, you can always use my swords as a base, since they’re already where they need to be.) There seems to be a limit to how many attributes you can add, though; seven is fine, but if you try to add an eight one (or just add one on the eighth line of the attribute text list), then the game will claim that the it is “out of range,” even though the BHAVs are just fine. 😑 Just so you’re aware, in case you’re planning on making an all-Klingon training dummy (which would be awesome, BTW. I’m just sayin’ πŸ˜‰ ).

  7. Hello Nixnivis.First thank you for your answer.I understand you.In that case, make an invisible dummy. Two jedis fighing each against their respective invisible dummy can be put together(moveobjects on-boolprop snapObjectsToGrid false)so it looks as if they were fighting/training together. If the dummy is on ONE tile, anybody can put the dummies with the neutral motilda-thing immediately in the right position.Knights or jedis will fight against each other from the beginning.

    • I used my admin magic to fix the typo for you. πŸ™‚ And yes, an invisible dummy will work best for everyone, especially since it will have different kinds of swords that don’t necessarily belong in the same universe. πŸ˜‰

I’m working on an update to my current dummies (I’m going to make it so that adults can select a sword for their children, as per Charity’s request), but when I’m done with that, I’m going to start on this new one.

What’s “the neutral mootilda-thing”? I’m not sure what that is.

  8. The neutral motilda-thing is what she called the “Strong,Stackable OMSP for Base Game”. It is the completely black OMSP
without inclination(zero degree=neutral). For more info ,look at my ladder-tuts at the Keep .You will see hundreds of them, lol.
Put anything one-tiled on it and it becomes throughwalkable.A column on the neutral is no longer a column but a simple
decorative object. You can put things and sims outside of your lot and still interact with them.

    carolus

    • Ahhhh, now I know what you mean! Thanks for explaining. πŸ™‚

There’s no need to put the invisible dummy on an OMSP for Sims to be able to walk through it, though – the current one is already set up that way, and I’ll be cloning the new one from that one. Saves me some work that way. πŸ™‚

  9. Nix, your up-date on Rebeccah’s training dummy is FANTASTIC! I thought I had all the training dummys I would ever need But now I think I’ll tank all the others and just keep yours (and Sunni’s scarecrow swordsman) for my medieval game. And I would second the idea of adding a falchion, they are a much more maneuverable weapon than many would suspect. Many thanks for sharing this with us. Greywolf3

    • Thank you very much! πŸ˜€ I’m so glad you like them!

Your falchion vote has been registered. πŸ™‚ You’d know much more about this than I, I’d barely know which end of a falchion to hold, let alone what do to with it. (Stick ’em with the pointy end?)

  10. error message

These OMSPs are not by Mootilda but made by Silent Lucidity.many apologies.I always mix them, sorry.
By the way ,there are some interesting (for you)pics at the end of the comments of the tut “rocks on your lots” about asteroid Aleph 1183.

    carolus

    • Don’t worry, I knew what you meant anyway. πŸ™‚ And they do seem like something Mootilda could have made, they’re just the kind of clever, game-improving things she was so good at. Dang, but I miss her. 😦

And I love your asteroid! πŸ˜€ I must say, I’m extremely impressed by your building skills, I couldn’t build something like that if my life depended on it. (Building is one of the Sim things I’m really bad at; I can build a boxy box, but other than that…)

  11. Everyone who is still working for sims2 has his speciality:You can mesh ,I cannot.Today I learned to recolor simple objects.
I am of course very proud about the result.I recolored Js very old mirandahull(purple)in white after a dozen of unsuccessful attemps. You can see the MAGELLAN on the bucket under carolus-v2.It is a completely new design.

    • No, not everyone creating for ts2 can mesh! Stubbornness is not 100% connected to meshing ability.

I’m always proud when one of us holdouts learns a new skill — and I’m proud of you!

  12. HI THERE! Another great creation! As for modifying and sharing Sim Wardrobe items, Paladin expressed his permission several years ago when his site went down. We at the Keep contacted him if we could host his files and he told us to do whatever with them, that he has officially retired from Sims and doesn’t care any longer. He even noted that while he’d renew his site, he wouldn’t guarantee for how long, so make sure you grab what you want because the site might not always be around. So, it’s safe to use his items with credit from what he’s told us.

    • Sunni! Most welcome to my humble abode. πŸ˜€

Thanks for the info, that’s very good to know! It’s a pity Paladin couldn’t be bothered to update his policy before he left, but it’s good to know that he shared it with someone in the community; at least from my googling, nobody else seems to know anything beyond what it says at his site. So thanks for letting us know!

  13. That’s a good news.Thank you , Sunni.

Nix,I have the paladin swordthing in my downloads. If you need it,just tell me.

    • Sorry for the late reply, but I haven’t been well.

I have it, too, but thanks for the offer. πŸ™‚ And I’ve looked at it, now that I know I’m allowed to, and I should absolutely be able to make a light sabre version. Watch this space, as they say!

      • A version of that with different swords/weapons would be amazing!

Also, hope you feel better soon!

        • (I took the liberty of merging your comments. πŸ™‚ )

I absolutely agree – but I’m not sure if I can pull it off. :/ There’s some stuff going on with Paladin’s duel swords that I don’t quite understand, but I might need to if I’m going to make more complex changes to it than just replacing one sword with another. But I’ll definitely see what I can do, because it would be amazing (and great for storytelling purposes, too)!

And thanks, I am. Don’t remember if I’ve said so before, but I’ve got a chronic disease and it gets the better of me on occasion. Nothing to be concerned about, it won’t kill me or anything, but it can be a major pain in the rear. 😑

            • The edit button is mean to everybody except me. πŸ˜‰ Unfortunately, only the blog owner can edit comments (not my idea, I might add, it’s all WordPress’ doing), even if the commenter has a WP account. It’s one of the (otherwise very few) things I don’t like here – probably because I’m sloppy and don’t proofread when I comment on other WP blogs since I’m so used to being able to edit comments on my own. πŸ˜›

                • I am actually working on it even as we speak. πŸ™‚ Well, sort of; because of how they’re set up, the swords turned out to be nigh unmoddable (you could replace the sword, but that was about it and I wanted to do more), so I’ve started from scratch and am making a brand new thing that uses his swordfighting BHAVs, but is set up completely differently. It won’t be an object on the wall, it will be a social – but one that’s only accessible if the Sim has a certain object in his/her inventory. (It didn’t make sense to me to make it available for all> Sims; this way, it’s still the player who decides which Sims will or won’t be able to duel others.)

It’s not finished by far, but it is well under way. So watch this space!

                    • Oh, I’m still doing this. πŸ˜€ I’ve just had to take a break from it for a while, even before my hiatus. I’m like that when I’m making something complex like this, I need to step away every now and then to clear my head, lest I burn myself out and/or get completely fed up with the thing, and never finish it. But I’m about to pick it up again; I’ve got one more set of items I want to get out first (the actual items are more or less finished, I just need to take screenshots and write something somewhat coherent about it), but as soon as I’m done with that, I’m going to tackle the swords again. Figuratively speaking. πŸ˜‰

But if I ever get to the point with this where I decide to just scrap it (not that I see that happening, I’ve put too much work into it at this point for that), I promise I’ll let you know here, so you aren’t waiting in vain.

  14. Thank you so much for all your wonderful Sims2 downloads. I returned to the game after several years and am thrilled to find all these amazing options. It’s like a whole new game!

    • So sorry for the late reply, but I started the new by getting knocked down by a hellish cold, so I haven’t been on much.

Anyway. You’re very welcome, and I’m happy you enjoy them! πŸ˜€ And welcome back to The Sims 2; the modding community is indeed still going strong, and people are still coming up with new things, and new ways of doing things. Sure, some TS2 creators have moved on to 3 or 4, or stopped creating entirely, but there are many new creators, too (which is pretty amazing IMO, considering how old the game is and how hard EA is trying to pretend nobody plays it anymore). So there’s lots to discover out there! πŸ™‚
